Served seven consecutive terms as a U.S. Representative from California from 1939 to 1953.
Born in Oakland, California, and moved to San Jose, California, in 1913.
Graduated from San Jose High School in 1923 and engaged in agricultural pursuits and fruit growing from 1925.
Was a Republican during his time in Congress.
Advocated for the removal of Japanese-American citizens from the Pacific Coast states during World War II.
Did not seek renomination in 1952 and retired from Congress.
Post-Congress, served on the board of directors of Bank of America, was president of California Canning Pear Association and Pacific States Canning Pear Association, worked with the Department of Agriculture, served as an administrative assistant to President Eisenhower, and was a member of the staff of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives until 1962.
Died by self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1981 in Hollister, California.
His ashes were scattered at the top of Sonora Pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
