Born in the Rocky Point District of the Province of North Carolina in 1748.
Son of Samuel Ashe, who later became governor of North Carolina, and Mary Porter Ashe.
Owned at least 63 slaves as per the 1790 census.
Served as a lieutenant in the New Hanover County militia during the Regulator uprising in 1771.
Fought in the American Revolutionary War, including battles at Moore’s Creek Bridge, Brandywine Creek, Germantown, and Monmouth.
Served in the Province of North Carolina House of Burgesses in 1775.
Elected to the North Carolina House of Commons (1784–1786) and served as Speaker in 1786.
Delegate to the Congress of the Confederation in 1787 and a delegate at the Fayetteville Convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1789.
Served in the North Carolina Senate in 1789.
Elected to the 1st and 2nd United States Congress as an Anti-Administration candidate, serving from 1790 to 1793.
Elected Governor of North Carolina by the General Assembly in 1802 but died before taking office.
Married Elizabeth Montfort in 1779, with whom he had one child, Samuel Porter Ashe.
His nephew, John Baptista Ashe, served as a Representative from Tennessee.
Died on November 27, 1802, and is buried in Halifax, North Carolina.
