  • Served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1811 to 1813.
  • Represented Virginia’s 2nd congressional district.
  • Elected as a Federalist, winning with 56.44% of the vote against a Democratic-Republican opponent.
  • Previously a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1798.
  • Practiced law in Berkeley County, Virginia (now Jefferson County, West Virginia).
  • Notably defended Aaron Burr during his treason trial.
  • Held the position of Commonwealth attorney for Jefferson County after his congressional term.
  • Died in 1823 and is buried in the Old Episcopal Church Cemetery in Shepherdstown, Virginia.
