Served as a U.S. Congressman from Maryland’s fifth district from 1825 to 1829.
Son of Commodore Joshua Barney, a notable figure in the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
Appointed as a captain and assistant district quartermaster general in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812, serving from 1814 to 1815.
Ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1822 before being elected to two consecutive terms in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses.
Did not win re-election in 1828 for the Twenty-first Congress.
Pursued literary interests after his congressional career until his death in 1857.
Buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
