Served two terms as a U.S. Representative from Indiana from 1919 to 1923.
Was an educator before entering politics, teaching in various places in Indiana from 1882 to 1907.
Graduated from Indiana State University in 1893 and from Indiana University in 1903, with additional studies in history at the University of Chicago.
Became the superintendent of schools for Ripley County for fourteen years.
Engaged in the timber, milling, and contracting business, as well as agriculture, after returning to Benham, Indiana, in 1907.
Served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1916.
Chaired the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings during the Sixty-seventh Congress.
Was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922.
Moved to Batesville, Indiana, in 1923 and worked as a building contractor.
Returned to the role of superintendent of schools for Ripley County from 1924 to 1929.
Retired from active business in 1931 and lived in Batesville, Indiana, until his death in 1935.
Was interred in Benham Church Cemetery, near Benham, Indiana.
