- Served as the 16th Governor of Illinois from 1873 to 1877.
- Succeeded Richard J. Oglesby after Oglesby’s resignation to accept a Senate seat.
- Previously served as a colonel in the 17th Illinois Cavalry during the American Civil War, later brevetted to brigadier general.
- Elected Cook County Sheriff before serving in the Illinois Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
- His governorship coincided with the Long Depression and the rise of the Anti-Monopolist Party, later known as the Greenback Party.
- Oversaw significant state initiatives, including the establishment of schools for the deaf and blind, and various hospitals for the mentally ill.
- Appointed as Assistant United States Treasurer in Chicago after his governorship.
- Moved to Hollywood, California, in 1895, where he lived until his death in 1910.
