Led efforts to change House rules to prohibit campaign contributions from being distributed on the House floor.
Criticized for close ties with lobbyists and for distributing campaign contributions from tobacco industry lobbyists on the House floor.
Called for the cancellation of a Smithsonian exhibit he found offensive and was criticized for adjourning the House without passing the Hurricane Sandy relief bill.
Described as a “hard-core conservative” but had a reputation for being able to listen and engage across the aisle.
Opposed same-sex marriage and was a signer of Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
Supported the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and opposed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Advocated for changes in Social Security, including raising the retirement age to 70 and tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index.
