  • Successfully eliminated funding for MX and Pershing II missiles in 1982
  • Faced electoral challenges due to district reapportionment after the 1980 census, which significantly altered the demographic makeup of his constituency
  • Experienced health issues later in life, including a cancer-related kidney ailment, and died from a seizure at the age of 61
