Born in Greensboro, Georgia, in 1799.
Studied law and gained admission to the state bar in 1809.
Practiced law in Lagrange, Georgia.
Served in the Georgia House of Representatives.
Was a company commander during the Creek War.
Elected as an Anti-Jacksonian Representative to the 24th United States Congress to fill a vacancy.
Served in Congress from January 2, 1837, to March 3, 1837.
Lost reelection bid for the 25th Congress in 1836.
Advocated for a petition for the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia.
Supported the forced removal of Creek Native American tribes.
Elected as a Whig to the 26th Congress and re-elected for the 27th Congress.
Resigned from Congress during the 27th term, serving from March 4, 1839, to October 1, 1841.
Moved to Tuskegee, Alabama, and later near Montgomery, Alabama.
Was a delegate to the Union convention at Montgomery in 1852.
Lost a campaign in 1855 for the 34th U.S. Congress.
Participated in the Alabama secession convention in 1861, which passed the Ordinance of Secession.
Died on January 1, 1863, on his plantation near Montgomery and was buried there.
