Graduated from Groton School and Harvard University, where he was roommates with Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Engaged in the real estate business and served in the National Guard of New York for five years.
Served as a United States Representative for one term.
Unsuccessfully contested an election following his term in Congress.
Worked as a special assistant to the Secretary of the Interior and served in the Tank Corps during World War I.
Participated as joint secretary in President Woodrow Wilson’s Industrial Conference and was a delegate to multiple Democratic National Conventions.
Studied monetary theory at Harvard University’s Graduate School.
Owned and developed significant real estate, including a 100-acre estate in New York and a 1,600-acre ranch in Big Sur, California.
Innovated in residential construction, including building a house with a unique marble staircase and large windows overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and another house made from deconstructed gas stations.
Contributed to the development of Big Sur by introducing the first electricity in the area and constructing notable houses, including one known as “Tin House.”
Donated his Big Sur property to the state of California with the stipulation it be used as a park named after Julia Pfeiffer Burns.
Involved in academic administration, serving on a committee for Harvard University’s Graduate School of Public Administration.
His home in New York was added to the National Register of Historic Places posthumously.
