American politician who served as a U.S. Representative.
Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, and educated in local public schools and academies.
Moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1828 to learn printing.
Co-founded the Cambridge Press in 1835 and worked in the printing business until 1842.
Transitioned to banking in 1850.
Played a significant role in the formation of the Republican Party in 1856.
Served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872.
Elected to three consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1875 to 1881.
Chose not to seek renomination in 1880.
Continued his business pursuits until his death in 1900.
Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
