  • Was a slave owner and U.S. Congressman for one term (1831-1833)
  • Attended private schools and the Lumberton Male Academy
  • Served in the North Carolina Senate multiple times between 1817 and 1827
  • Affiliated with the Jacksonian Democrats during his congressional term
  • Defeated in his bid for re-election in 1832 and unsuccessful in two subsequent attempts to return to Congress
  • Returned to agriculture and slaveholding after his political career, owning thirty-eight slaves by 1860
  • Buried in Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Aberdeen, North Carolina
