- Graduated with a B.S. degree from Montana State College in 1927
- Completed postgraduate work in mathematics and physical chemistry at California Institute of Technology (1935–1938)
- Worked as a wheat and cattle rancher
- Served as a commander of an armored task force in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, from Normandy to the Elbe River
- Received the Silver Star and Croix de Guerre Medal with Palm for his military service
- Separated from service as a lieutenant colonel in 1945
- Served as a Major General in the Army Reserve, commanding the 96th Infantry Division Reserve (1948–1962)
- Member of the Montana House of Representatives (1947–1948)
- Member of the Montana State Senate (1949–1956), serving as Democratic floor leader (1954–1956)
- Unsuccessful candidate for the Eighty-fourth Congress in 1954
- Elected to the Eighty-fifth and Eighty-sixth Congresses as a Democrat (1957–1961)
- Did not seek renomination in 1960 and was unsuccessful in seeking the Democratic nomination for United States Senator
- Resumed engineering pursuits after leaving Congress
- Served again in the Montana State Senate (1966–1970)
- Lived in Conrad, Montana, until his death in 1991
