Declined the position of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in 1874
Became chief counsel of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Co. and principal counsel of the Mexican National Railway after moving to Colorado Springs in 1877
Married Frances Esther Metcalfe and had one child, Lyman Metcalfe Bass
Died of consumption in 1889 and is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, New York
