  • Born in Bloomington, Illinois, and attended parochial schools.
  • Worked as a reporter before pursuing a legal career, graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1902.
  • Admitted to the bar in 1902 and began practicing law in Bloomington.
  • Served as presiding judge of the Illinois Court of Claims from 1913 to 1917.
  • Acted as census supervisor for McLean County in 1920.
  • Served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1921 to 1923.
  • Was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1924.
  • Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms from 1933 to 1937.
  • Did not seek renomination in 1936 and returned to practicing law until his death in 1941.
  • Interred in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bloomington, Illinois.
