Served as an Ohio Congressman and a Militia General during the War of 1812.
Born in Frederick County in the Province of Maryland, moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania during his youth, and later settled in Ohio.
Married Rebecca Johnson around 1792.
Joined the military in 1790 and participated in the Northwest Indian War, serving on General Anthony Wayne’s staff.
Became a Colonel of the Militia in Columbiana County, Ohio, and was promoted to Brigadier General during the War of 1812.
Led brigades from Eastern Ohio and established headquarters at Camp Christmas in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.
Began his political career as Clerk of the Columbiana County Court before serving in the Thirteenth United States Congress from April 20, 1813, to June 7, 1814.
Appointed as the register of the Federal Land Office in Wooster in 1814, a position he held until 1824.
Named a Presidential elector in 1840 for Harrison/Tyler.
Died in Wooster, Ohio, at the age of 73.
His home in Wooster is preserved by the Wayne County Historical Society of Ohio and was once used as a woman’s dormitory by the College of Wooster.
