Elected as a U.S. Representative for North Carolina, serving from 1879 to 1883.
Graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University) and practiced law in Yadkinville.
Enlisted in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Held the position of state solicitor for the sixth district while on furlough from military service.
Elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1874, serving as Senate President during the 1874 session.
Did not seek re-election to the House in 1882 and returned to law practice.
Appointed and later elected as a superior court judge in 1889, serving until his death.
Buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, North Carolina.
