- Born in Boydton, Virginia, in 1805.
- Moved to Tennessee in 1825 and initially worked as a teacher.
- Engaged in agricultural pursuits after relocating to Giles County.
- Served as a justice of the peace in 1840.
- Elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1851 and 1852.
- Served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1853 to 1855 as a member of the Whig Party.
- Did not seek renomination after his term in Congress.
- Returned to agricultural work after his congressional service.
- Served in the Tennessee Senate in 1871 and 1872.
- Married Martha Patsy Laird and had nine children.
- Died in 1887 at the age of 82 and is buried in McLaurine Cemetery, Tennessee.
