  • Born to a wealthy family in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • Attended private University School, graduated from Harvard College and law school.
  • Commenced the practice of law in Cleveland in 1906.
  • Served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1911-1915.
  • Served as chief of the legal section of the War Industries Board during World War I.
  • Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1930, re-elected in 1932, but lost in 1938 to Robert A. Taft.
  • Became an expert on banking while in the House, helped frame the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and the Federal Farm Loan Act.
