- Has been the U.S. representative for Connecticut’s 3rd congressional district since 1991.
- Known for her distinctive fashion sense and cropped bob hairstyle.
- Born to an Italian-American family; her mother was a New Haven alderwoman, and her father was an Italian immigrant.
- Holds a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College, attended the London School of Economics, and earned a master’s degree in international politics from Columbia University.
- Worked as Senator Chris Dodd’s chief of staff and campaign manager, was the executive director of EMILY’s List, and coordinated Michael Dukakis’s tristate area campaign before entering the House.
- Selected as chair of the House Appropriations Committee for the 117th Congress, becoming the second woman to hold the position.
- Co-chaired the House Democratic Steering Committee from 2003 to 2021.
- Founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has a strong interest in health policy issues, especially women’s health.
- Endorsed Barack Obama for President in 2008 and has been critical of the FDA’s failures to protect the public from unsafe foods and medical products.
- Has been a vocal supporter of abortion rights and has opposed the Hyde Amendment.
- Advocates for stronger regulation of firearms and has an F rating from the NRA.
- Supported campaign finance reform and voted for the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to modernize voting technology and make voting more accessible.
- Sponsored the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, which aimed at reforming the FDA’s food safety responsibilities.
- Introduced the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act (“SWEET Act”) to discourage excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and fund prevention and treatment programs for obesity and diabetes.
- Voted to provide Israel with support following the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
- Married to political strategist Stan Greenberg and is a grandmother of five.
- Survived ovarian cancer in 1985 and continues to support biomedical research.
- Honorary board member of the National Organization of Italian American Women and a leader in the group Catholic Democrats.
- Received the 2009 Health Policy Hero Award and the 2019 Foremothers Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Center for Health Research.
