Served as a U.S. Representative for New York from 1835 to 1837.
Nephew of William H. Vanderbilt and related to Commodore Vanderbilt.
Worked as an agent for Commodore Vanderbilt’s steamship lines.
Married Lydia Rawson Taylor and had a son named Cornelius Vanderbilt Barton.
Held the rank of major in the State militia in 1818 and colonel in 1833.
Was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1821 to 1822.
Participated in the Andrew Jackson reception committee in 1833.
Did not seek renomination for Congress in 1836 and returned to the steamship business.
Served as a director of the Tompkinsville Lyceum.
Died in New Dorp, Staten Island, New York, and is buried at Moravian Cemetery in the same location.
