Was an American lawyer, politician, and businessman in the 19th century.
Served as a United States Representative from New Hampshire during the 1870s.
Attended Phillips Academy and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1847.
Admitted to the bar in 1849 and began practicing law in Meredith, New Hampshire.
Served in the Forty-second and Forty-fourth Congresses, with terms from 1871 to 1873 and 1875 to 1877, respectively.
Did not seek reelection in 1876 and returned to practicing law and engaging in business ventures, including real estate and insurance.
Co-founded the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company and served as its director and vice-president.
Was president of several railroads, including the Portsmouth and Concord Railroad and the Suncook Valley Railroad.
Declined appointments as chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court.
Died in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, and is interred in Valley Cemetery in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Grandson of Samuel Bell, the 14th Governor of New Hampshire, and nephew of James Bell, a United States Senator.
