Served as the first Governor of Illinois from 1818 to 1822.
Elected without opposition during the Era of Good Feelings.
Prior to governorship, served as a representative from the Illinois Territory to the U.S. Congress.
Focused on improving transportation infrastructure, advocating for toll roads and bridges.
Attempted to establish a canal connecting Lake Michigan and the Illinois River, which was completed after his term.
Concerned about crime, particularly arson, and took steps to reform punishment laws.
Opposed the creation of a non-capitalized State Bank of Illinois, which later went bankrupt.
Returned to farming after his term and held a position as chief record keeper of the Kaskaskia land office.
Contributed to local initiatives, including funding for the state’s first penitentiary.
Died of pneumonia in 1832 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, with a memorial marking his grave.
Bond County in Illinois is named in his honor, as well as a lake in Greenville, Illinois.
