Was a farmer, miller, and political leader in the 18th century.
Represented New York in the Continental Congress in 1774 and 1775.
Signed the Continental Association.
Came from a family that settled on Long Island during the Dutch colony of New Netherland era.
Attended and graduated from a Dutch school in Flatbush.
Bought a home in downtown Brooklyn in 1748, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Married Maria Schenck in 1748.
Served as county clerk for Kings County from 1750 until his death.
Held a seat in the Province of New York Assembly after 1761.
Supported non-importation agreements and radical members of the Continental Congress.
Helped defeat the Galloway Plan for union with England.
Elected to the revolutionary New York Provincial Congress in early 1775.
Illness forced his return from Philadelphia and he died in July 1775.
Originally buried in the Dutch Burying Ground in New Lots, later re-interred in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
