Death
- Served three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1861 to 1867.
- Born near Lititz, Pennsylvania, with a British Sephardic Jewish family background.
- Moved to Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1826 and later to Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1856.
- Worked for the Reading Company and served on the Board of Education before entering politics.
- Engaged in the trust, fire-insurance, and relief-association businesses after leaving Congress.
- Was a delegate to the 1880 Democratic National Convention.
- Received a reception on the floor of the House of Representatives in 1912 as the last surviving member of the Thirty-seventh Congress.
- Worked in banking and the insurance business until his death in 1913.
- Interred in Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania.
