Served in the New York Militia during the Revolutionary War and attained the rank of brigadier general in the state militia.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for three non-consecutive terms, representing New York’s 5th congressional district.
Served as a U.S. Senator for a brief period before resigning to become Postmaster of New York City.
Married to Rebecca Tallmadge, with whom he had two daughters.
Interred at Dutch Burying Ground in Manhattan, later re-interred at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
