- Served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Maine’s 1st congressional district.
- Was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2008 but lost to Republican incumbent Susan Collins.
- First elected to Congress in 1996, defeating Republican incumbent James Longley, Jr., and was re-elected five times.
- Appointed president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers in 2009.
- Authored the book “Dangerous Convictions: What’s Really Wrong with the U.S. Congress” in 2013.
- Born in Portland, Maine, and has a notable family background with his grandfather serving as chairman (mayor) of Portland.
- Attended Bowdoin College, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and later attended Harvard Law School.
- Began his political career as a staff member for Governor Kenneth M. Curtis and Senator Edmund S. Muskie, served on the Portland City Council, and was Portland’s mayor before his congressional tenure.
- Ran for governor in 1994 but lost in the Democratic primary.
- During his time in Congress, focused on environmental protection, healthcare, campaign finance reform, and small business support.
- Served on several committees, including the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Budget Committee, and was Co-Chairman of the House Affordable Medicines Task Force.
