- Served in the United States House of Representatives for Missouri for two terms (1857-1861)
- Was a slave owner and a practicing lawyer
- Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and later moved to Palmyra, Missouri
- Admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1828 and began practicing law in Franklin, Kentucky, before moving to Missouri in 1830
- Elected to the Missouri House of Representatives (1840-1844)
- Served in the Missouri Constitutional Convention of 1845
- Condemned mass escapes of enslaved people in 1853 due to the financial loss to slave owners
- Initially elected to Congress as a member of the American Party (Know-Nothing) and was reelected as an Independent Democrat
- Served as a presidential elector for the Whig Party in 1844, 1848, 1852, and 1856
- Died in Palmyra, Missouri, in 1885 and was buried in the City Cemetery
