Was a slave owner.
Served as a drummer boy in the War of 1812.
Graduated from Jefferson Medical College and practiced medicine in Halifax and adjacent counties.
Served in the Virginia State Senate in 1848 and 1849.
Unsuccessful in a 1846 bid for the Thirtieth Congress but was elected to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving from 1849 to 1853.
Played a role in J.E.B. Stuart’s appointment to West Point.
Was not re-nominated in 1852 and returned to practicing medicine in Halifax County.
Died near Halifax Court House, Virginia, and was buried in the family burial ground there.
Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1849 and re-elected in 1851, defeating Whig Thomas Stanhope Flournoy both times.
