Death

  • American politician, lawyer, and planter active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
  • Attended Washington Academy and graduated from Princeton College in 1794.
  • Admitted to the bar around 1796 and began practicing law in Accomack County, Virginia.
  • Engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a slave owner.
  • Served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1798 to 1801 and again in 1819, 1820, and from 1828 to 1831.
  • Elected to the Virginia State Senate, serving from 1801 to 1809.
  • Served as a colonel of militia during the War of 1812.
  • Elected as a Federalist to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1813 to 1815.
  • Participated as a delegate in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830.
  • Died at his plantation, “Mount Custis,” in 1834 and was buried in the family cemetery on the estate.
