Born in Kinderhook, New York, to John J. Beekman and Annatje Pruyn.
Had an elder brother, Dr. John Pruyn Beekman, who was a member of the New York State Senate.
Studied law, became an attorney and farmer in Smithfield and later in Peterboro.
Served in local offices, including as a town clerk, and was active in the militia as aide-de-camp.
Active in the Anti-Masonic movement of the 1820s and 1830s.
Served as a U.S. Representative for New York’s twenty-second district for one term (March 4, 1829 – March 3, 1831) as an Anti-Jacksonian.
Was an unsuccessful Anti-Masonic candidate for the New York State Senate in 1831.
Later moved back to Kinderhook, where he farmed, practiced law, was active in several businesses, including the Kinderhook National Bank, and served as Columbia County Excise Commissioner.
Spent his retirement years between Kinderhook and New York City, living with his daughter during winters.
Married to Lydia Van Schaack.
Died in Kinderhook and is interred at Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery.
