- Served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from March 4, 1905, to March 3, 1931.
- Was a prominent voice of racist opposition to anti-lynching legislation in 1922.
- Returned to the private sector after an unsuccessful renomination in 1930.
- Died in Gainesville, Georgia, in 1941.
