Born in Owatonna, Minnesota, and moved to Dakota Territory in 1882.
Graduated from North Dakota State Normal School at Mayville in 1900 and from University of Minnesota Law School in 1904.
Worked as deputy superintendent of schools, a lawyer, and engaged in livestock breeding and farming.
Served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1907 to 1911, including as speaker.
Served as the eighth Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota from 1911 to 1913.
Held the position of state’s attorney of Williams County and assistant United States district attorney for North Dakota.
Was president of the Farmers’ Holiday Association, advocating for farmers’ rights.
Served multiple terms in the United States House of Representatives, supporting New Deal programs and Native American issues.
Opposed the Communist Control Act and supported the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
Married his secretary, Jean Rodgers, at the age of 79.
Died in Washington, D.C., and was interred on his ranch in Williston, North Dakota.
Father of Quentin Burdick, who succeeded him in the U.S. House of Representatives.
