- Served as a United States Representative for multiple terms from 1897 to 1917.
- Held the position of Chairman of the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce during several Congresses.
- Authored the Adamson Act, which established regulations for railroad workers’ hours.
- Appointed to the Board of General Appraisers in 1917 and later became an Associate Justice of the United States Customs Court.
- Resumed legal practice after retirement from the judiciary.
- Died in New York City and was interred in Carrollton, Georgia.
- Recognized posthumously with a square named in his honor in downtown Carrollton.
