Death

  • Served as a U.S. Congressman for Maryland’s fifth district from 1873 to 1875.
  • Born to a family of German descent.
  • Graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in 1833.
  • Engaged in the hardware business with his family and later in banking and mining.
  • Played a significant role as a Union leader during the American Civil War, working to prevent Maryland’s secession.
  • Was a founder and director of the First National Bank of Maryland and held director positions in insurance companies, savings banks, and manufacturing companies.
  • Ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1866 and 1868 before being elected in 1872.
  • Did not seek re-election in 1874, returning to his business pursuits afterward.
  • Contributed to founding a Soldiers’ Home and an asylum for orphans, and assisted African American freedmen during the Reconstruction era, including co-founding a school for black teachers in Baltimore.
  • Died from Bright’s disease and is interred in Greenmount Cemetery.
