Served two terms as a U.S. Representative for New York’s 13th congressional district, first from 1825 to 1827 and then from 1829 to 1833.
Born in New Shoreham, Rhode Island, and later moved to Richfield, New York, where he worked on the family farm and attended common schools.
Briefly studied medicine before switching to law, eventually becoming a lawyer after reading law and working as a clerk in a lawyer’s office.
Served as Surrogate of Otsego County from 1821 to 1824.
Married twice, first to Emily P. English with whom he had several children, including William P. Angel and Wilkes Angel, and then to Clarissa English, with whom he had ten children, including James R. Angel and Texas Angel.
Resumed practicing law after his terms in Congress, forming partnerships with various individuals including Morris Brown and Martin Grover, and later with his son Wilkes Angel.
Was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1846 and served as First Judge and Surrogate of the Allegany County Court from 1847 to 1851.
Died in Angelica, Allegany County, New York, and was buried at Until the Day Dawn Cemetery there.
