- Became editor in chief and later chief proprietor and manager of The Boston Daily Advertiser and The Boston Evening Record
- Served as Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives for five years
- Elected to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses
- Declined renomination in 1898 to return to newspaper management
- Served as president of the Union Trust Co. of Boston
- Died of pneumonia in 1906 and was interred in Newton Cemetery
- Married Annie Louise Bailey and had four children
