  • Served as a Deputy from Mississippi to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1862.
  • Served as a U.S. Representative from 1853 to 1855.
  • Graduated from Yale College in 1841 and was a member of the Skull and Bones Society.
  • Admitted to the bar in 1844 and practiced law.
  • Had an interest in horticulture.
  • Served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851.
  • Was the Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1856 to 1857.
  • Served as president of the State secession convention in 1861.
  • Enlisted in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, raised the 35th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, and acted as brigade commander.
  • Was captured and paroled at Vicksburg, broke parole, and was wounded at the Battle of Allatoona.
  • Captured again in the attack on Fort Blakeley and held prisoner until May 1, 1865.
  • Resumed practicing law after the war until his death in 1868.
  • Married to Sarah Fearn, with a son who also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives.
  • Interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
