Grew up in a public housing project and was educated at East Hartford High School and Central Connecticut State University
Worked as a high school history teacher and an assistant athletics coach before co-owning an insurance agency
Began political career on the East Hartford Board of Education and Town Council, then served in the Connecticut Senate, eventually as president pro tempore
Ran unsuccessfully for governor of Connecticut in 1994 before winning his congressional seat in 1998
Elected vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus in 2006 and later chair of the caucus
Introduced legislation focused on nationalizing the US’s energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Introduced the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 and was a strong advocate for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
Consistently supported same-sex marriage, legal abortion, and voted to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy
Has a 100% rating with the League of Conservation Voters and a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America
Served on the Committee on Ways and Means, including as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Social Security
Co-chair of several caucuses including the Congressional Shellfish Caucus and the House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Coalition
Married to Leslie Best with three children, residing in East Hartford
