Served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997, initially representing New Jersey’s 8th congressional district and, following redistricting in 2013, the 9th congressional district.
Before his tenure in the House, served in the New Jersey General Assembly for four terms starting in 1988 and was the mayor of Paterson, New Jersey.
Grandson of Italian immigrants and was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey.
Attended Fordham University, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in philosophy.
Spent 12 years as a high school teacher in Paramus, New Jersey, and later worked as a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Served in the United States Army and the Army Reserves.
Involved in local education as a member and president of the Paterson Board of Education and served on the board of trustees for Passaic County Community College.
Played a significant role in legislation related to fire safety, transportation infrastructure, and health care, including the creation of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and the Concussion Treatment and Care Tools Act (ConTACT).
Has been vocal about the representation of Italian Americans and engaged in efforts to regulate ticket sales practices, including introducing the BOSS ACT.
Responded to the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade by supporting a woman’s right to choose, marking a shift from his earlier votes on abortion-related legislation.
Voted with President Joe Biden’s stated position 100% of the time in the 117th Congress according to a FiveThirtyEight analysis.
Holds several committee assignments and caucus memberships, including Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight in the Committee on Ways and Means, and co-chair of multiple caucuses such as the Law Enforcement Caucus and the Congressional Fire Services Caucus.
