The legislation is titled the “VA Abortion Transparency Act of 2024.”
It mandates the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to submit a report to Congress on abortions facilitated by the Department of Veterans Affairs within 30 days of the enactment of the Act and quarterly thereafter.
The report must include:
- The total number of abortions facilitated, with details such as whether the procedure was conducted at a VA center or by a non-VA provider, the type of abortion (surgical or drug-induced), whether the patient was a veteran or a dependent, the gestational age at the time of the abortion, the legal exception under which the abortion was performed, and the location (VISN and State) of the procedure.
- Total expenditures for facilitating abortions, including costs related to procedures, staff training, infrastructure improvements, and any use of the Cost of War Toxic Exposures Fund for these purposes.
- The specific budget lines used by the Department to fund abortion facilitation.
The report must not include any patient-identifiable information.
