Legislation Details
- Establishes the “Veterans Expedited TSA Screening Safe Travel Act” or the “VETS Safe Travel Act.”
- Provides TSA PreCheck at no cost to certain severely injured or disabled veterans who meet specific criteria.
- Eligible veterans include those enrolled in the VA patient system who have lost a limb, become paralyzed, incurred permanent blindness, and require mobility aids.
- Requires the TSA Administrator and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to develop and implement a process for eligible veterans to receive PreCheck benefits within one year of the Act’s enactment.
- Mandates a briefing to Congress on the status of implementing the process for eligible veterans to receive PreCheck benefits within one year of the Act’s enactment.
- Directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the TSA Administrator to develop and implement outreach for disabled veterans about TSA programs designed to improve the screening process for passengers with disabilities.
- Instructs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the TSA Administrator to engage with veterans service organizations to assess veterans’ awareness of relevant TSA programs and examine the need for further measures to improve travel security procedures for disabled veterans.
- Requires a briefing to Congress on the implementation status of outreach and assessment efforts regarding TSA programs for disabled veterans within 180 days of the Act’s enactment.
