This proposal would create a nationwide public campaign to teach people how to stay safe online. A Commerce Department office would run the campaign, and it would be offered in multiple languages and formats when possible. The campaign would explain common online risks and simple steps to reduce them, like spotting phishing messages, checking if websites are secure, changing default passwords, using multi-factor authentication and strong passwords, keeping antivirus and software updates current, and considering a VPN. It would also cover which devices can be risky—computers, phones, tablets, Wi‑Fi routers, smart home gadgets, webcams, and other connected devices—how to review and limit app permissions, download apps from trusted sources, and safer ways to use public Wi‑Fi. The campaign would point people to tools and resources that help cut down online threats. A Commerce Department agency would be responsible for carrying it out.
