This bill renews and updates the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Program, which helps regions hit hard by drug trafficking. It sets aside $400 million each year from 2026 through 2031 to support joint work by local, state, Tribal, territorial, and federal partners to reduce drug trafficking and overdoses.
It also tells the program’s director to find and spread “promising practices” that make the work more effective. These include targeting dealers tied to overdose deaths, improving information sharing about crimes involving illegal drugs and guns, and using and evaluating proven prevention strategies. Once a practice is vetted, it must be developed and shared for use across all HIDTA regions.
