This bill aims to cut tiny clothing fibers (microfibers) from entering water through washing machines. Starting January 1, 2030, all new washers sold in the U.S. must include a built-in filter that catches very small fibers and a clear label telling consumers to check the filter and throw the lint in the trash. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy will set and update the rules, including allowing other filter standards if they work just as well at capturing microfibers.
The EPA must also study microfibers—small natural or synthetic textile fibers under 5 millimeters—looking at where they come from, how they move, possible harms to people and the environment, and whether they hit some communities harder. A public report is due within one year of the law taking effect. Companies that break the sales rule can face fines up to $10,000 for the first offense and $30,000 for later ones.
