This bill, the Preventing Fraudulent ICE Impersonation Act of 2025, aims to stop scams where people pretend to be ICE officers and scare or trick communities. It responds to reports of people using ICE logos and gear to gain trust and commit fraud.
If you are not a DHS officer on duty, it would be a crime to wear or show badges, clothing, or other items that look like ICE in a way that suggests you’re an officer. Penalties can include up to 7 years in prison. It also bans making or selling official ICE-branded badges or apparel without DHS permission, with fines up to $100,000 per violation. The government can seize unauthorized items. Sentences must also be increased by at least 6 months when someone impersonates an immigration officer.
The bill tells DHS to run a public awareness campaign and set up a national hotline and online portal so people can report impersonation. It also requires the Comptroller General to study the problem and report to Congress every 180 days. DHS must issue rules to carry out the law within 180 days.
