PROTECT the Second Amendment Act

This bill would make sure people who live in federally assisted rental housing can keep a firearm in their home if they can legally own one. It would also let them carry or transport the firearm through common areas (like hallways or lobbies) when they are going to or leaving their home.

It covers many HUD and USDA housing programs, including public housing, Section 8, HOME, the Housing Trust Fund, supportive housing for people with disabilities, housing for people with HIV/AIDS, Native American and Native Hawaiian housing, and rural rental housing programs.

• Who is affected: Residents in federally assisted rental housing across HUD and USDA programs.
• What changes: Residents could not be banned or given extra rules just for lawfully having a firearm in their unit, and they could carry it through common areas to and from their home.
• Important note: This applies only to people who may lawfully possess a firearm under existing law.
