This bill makes health insurers cover prostate cancer screening for men who are at higher risk starting at age 40, with no out‑of‑pocket costs. It says plans must pay for these screenings so cost is not a barrier to early detection. High‑risk men include African‑American men and men with a close family history of prostate cancer. The goal is to catch cancer earlier, when it’s much more treatable; prostate cancer often has no symptoms until late, and survival is far higher when found early.
Lawmakers cite high rates of prostate cancer, the lack of early symptoms, and worse outcomes for African‑American men as reasons to remove screening barriers.
