This bill sets up a competitive grant program in the Department of the Interior, working through the U.S. Geological Survey, to use satellites to monitor and manage wildfires. The program must award at least three grants within one year of the law taking effect, with grant sizes set by the department. Eligible recipients are state foresters, emergency managers, and similar state officials.
Grant funds can be used to buy and integrate high‑resolution satellite imaging and data from the newest wildfire monitoring satellites. The data would help spot and track active fires, measure burned areas and fire intensity, check the safety and effectiveness of prescribed burns, and guide post‑fire risk checks and recovery.
In short, it helps states get better satellite tools to detect fires early, manage them safely, and recover faster.
