Referred to the Committee on the Budget, and in addition to the Committee on Rules, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill would create a national commission in Congress to study the federal budget and recommend fixes. The commission must look for ways to improve the budget in the near term and keep it sustainable over time. It must propose a plan to balance the budget within 10 years, not counting interest on the debt, and address the gap between what the government spends and what it collects, including the rising costs of long‑term benefit programs.
The commission would have 18 members chosen by the President and leaders in Congress, with two co‑chairs from different parties. It must share its recommendations and member attendance on a public website, vote on a final report within one year after members are appointed, and end 30 days after delivering that report.
